Cybercrime Victims Deserve to be heard!

Cybercrime Victim Services lobying for change in Canadian Law.

What has your only Cybercrime Victim Lobbyist been up to?

On January 14th, I had the opportunity to meet with Conservative MP Damien C. Kurek to discuss the ongoing efforts of Cybercrime Victim Services Canada (CVS) in supporting victims of cybercrime. Our conversation was particularly timely, aligning with the Conservative Party's recently launched "Curb the Crime" campaign, which aims to address various facets of criminal activity across the nation.

During our meeting, we highlighted several milestones achieved by CVS. Notably, CVS stands as the first organization outside of law enforcement in Canada to successfully facilitate the return of stolen cryptocurrency. This accomplishment was made possible through our collaborative efforts with the Edmonton Police Service and Homeland Security, showcasing the power of cross-agency partnerships in combating cybercrime.

It was a unique meeting as I opened up to MP. Kurek about how hard it was to achieve this goal. CVS and myself personally have faced many obstacles and unexpected adversaries along the way. However, our proof is in our success, and now we desire to push forward and provide this success to others. The key is "Charity-Status" & updating currently existing Laws to enhance Law Enforcement officers ability to help. Have you seen our "Black Pearl Bill?"

Do you believe that a Victim of Cybercrime should have to hire an expensive Private Investigator or have their case dropped strictly because they didn't lose enough to catch Law Enforcements Eyes? If you answered NO to both those simple questions, then you already know why we are seeking Charity status..

  1. Victims of Cybercrime have the right to be heard!

Why are we Lobbying?

To further advocate for victims, CVS has appointed a registered lobbyist to champion six key support areas:

  1. Counseling and Mental Health Support: Providing emotional and psychological assistance to help victims navigate the aftermath of cybercrimes.

  2. Verified Cryptocurrency Tracing and Asset Recovery: Utilizing advanced tools, such as Chainalysis, to track and recover digital assets.

  3. Post-Fraud Financial Advice: Offering guidance to help victims restore financial stability and prevent future incidents.

  4. Accredited Private Investigations: Engaging certified professionals to delve into cyber incidents and gather actionable intelligence.

  5. Law Enforcement Communication Bridge: Establishing a seamless channel between victims and law enforcement agencies to ensure efficient information flow and case handling.

  6. Legal Aid Referrals: Connecting victims with legal experts specializing in cybercrime to provide necessary legal support.

The "Curb the Crime" initiative by the Conservative Party underscores the importance of such comprehensive support systems. By focusing on proactive measures and victim assistance, the campaign aims to create a safer environment for all Canadians. Our collaboration with policymakers like MP Kurek ensures that the voices of cybercrime victims are heard and addressed at the highest levels.

As we continue to advance our mission, CVS remains committed to pioneering solutions and advocating for resources that empower victims and deter cybercriminals. Together, with the support of community partners and legislative allies, we strive to build a resilient and secure digital landscape for everyone.
